Kevin Mapes joined Ball Janik LLP in 2001 and became a partner in 2006. His practice focuses on commercial litigation, especially environmental litigation, representation of policyholders in insurance coverage disputes, and construction defects. He regularly litigates general commercial matters in state and federal courts, representing plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of business disputes. Mr. Mapes’ previous experience advising insurance companies gives him a unique perspective on the insurance claims process, and has helped him recover millions of dollars for his policyholder clients.

Prior to joining Ball Janik, Mr. Mapes practiced in the Sacramento, California office of Bullivant Houser Bailey, where he represented insurance companies in coverage litigation with policyholders and advised insurers regarding their coverage obligations. He also litigated environmental claims, including claims involving leaking underground storage tanks, solvent contamination, and mold-related personal injury.
Mr. Mapes has represented clients, ranging from individuals to small business to large, publicly traded companies, on a wide range of insurance coverage matters, including environmental matters, property damage claims, flood claims, directors and officers coverage, construction claims, business interruption, general commercial liability, health insurance, and disability claims. He has successfully pursued claims based on insurer bad faith and other extra-contractual claims. Mr. Mapes also advises clients on the scope of their insurance coverage and potential issues that could arise in the future.
In addition to his insurance recovery practice, Mr. Mapes represents clients on a variety of environmental matters. He has litigated claims for remediation costs arising under state and federal law, and has negotiated with state and federal regulators in California, Oregon, and Washington. He has assisted clients with claims arising under the federal Superfund law and its state-law equivalent, RCRA claims, and Clean Water Act claims. He has also handled claims for Natural Resource Damages, including negotiations with state, federal, and tribal trustees.
Mr. Mapes regularly speaks and writes on insurance coverage issues. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Litigation Section of the Oregon State Bar Association, and is an associate member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS).
