Sarah Ryan chairs the firm's Labor and Employment law practice group. She has been in private practice in Portland, Oregon since 1983 and has been a partner with Ball Janik LLP since 1990. Her principal areas of practice are employment law and complex commercial litigation. Ms. Ryan represents some of Oregon’s leading employers and provides counsel and litigation services in general employment law as well as a wide range of employee relations issues. She has been recognized by peers as an industry leader in labor and employment according to Chambers USA and maintains the AV® Preeminent™ Rating from Martindale-Hubbell®, American Registry.
Ms. Ryan has extensive experience advising clients and litigating employment claims regarding harassment, discrimination and retaliation, intellectual property protection, breach of contract, wrongful termination, Title VII, ADA, ADEA, employment torts, wage and hour, and state and federal family medical leave laws. She has defended clients in Oregon and Washington state and federal courts and before the EEOC, the Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries (BOLI) and the Washington Human Rights Commission. Recently, Ms. Ryan achieved her eighth summary judgment dismissal in favor of one large private employer client.

Ms. Ryan is a frequent speaker on employment issues, including claims avoidance, reductions-in-force, harassment, discrimination and retaliation, and legally required leaves. She is a member and past president of the Oregon chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Ms. Ryan was the third woman to hold the position of president in the organization's 34-year history. Ms. Ryan is also a former member of the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar Business Litigation Section and served as an attorney representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference. Before entering private practice, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable George J. Woodrich of the Lane County Circuit Court.
Ms. Ryan was a founding director of Oregon Lawyers Against Hunger and served as general counsel to the Portland Human Resource Management Association (PHRMA). Ms. Ryan currently serves on the boards of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oregon and the Multnomah Bar Foundation.
