Fall Recruiting

Overview

Ball Janik LLP's summer associate program is an important source for hiring new associates. We are now accepting applications from second-year law students interested in being considered for a 2009 summer associate position in our Portland, Oregon office.  Beginning September 2008, Ball Janik will conduct on-campus interviews at a number of law schools on the West Coast. Although we are unable to participate at all on-campus interview programs throughout the country, we encourage second-year law students from top law schools to apply for a position in our 2009 summer associate program.

For those students interested in our offices in Central Oregon and on the East Coast, we do not have summer associate programs in either our Bend, Oregon or Washington, D.C. offices. As such, applications submitted for these offices will not be considered.

As a member of NALP (the National Association for Law Placement), Ball Janik will abide by NALP’s Principles and Standards for Law Placement and Recruitment Activities.  In accordance with the NALP Principles, the firm cannot accept first-year law student applications for a summer associate position until after December 1.

Who Should Apply

Our recruiting efforts are geared toward second-year law students who are interested in practicing law in Oregon. We prefer candidates with superior academic credentials, participation in law review or law journal, excellent writing ability and oral communication skills, relevant real life work experience, ties to the Pacific Northwest, as well as candidates with moot court or other oral advocacy experience.

When applying for a 2009 summer associate position, the application materials must include a cover letter (referencing Job #1193), a resume, law school transcript, and a writing sample (5-10 pages is sufficient). Application materials should be submitted to Ball Janik's Recruiting Coordinator at the address below, or by fax (503-295-1058) or directly to Linda Jordan's confidential email.

Fall On-Campus Interviews

Ball Janik LLP will participate in on-campus interviews at law schools on the West Coast. Although Ball Janik is conducting on-campus interviews at a limited number of schools, we will recruit throughout the country at top law schools and accept applications from second-year law students with the same criteria as specified above in "Who Should Apply".

Below are dates scheduled for on-campus interviews:

  • University of Washington School of Law
    Monday, September 8, 2008
  • Lewis & Clark Law School
    Wednesday, September 10, 2008
  • University of Oregon School of Law
    Monday, September 15, 2008
  • Willamette University College of Law
    Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Screening and Callback Interviews

After a screening or on-campus interview, a candidate may be invited for additional (or callback) interviews. Callback interviews may include four to five attorneys who are primarily members of Ball Janik's Recruiting Committee. Based upon the candidates' specific practice area interests, attorneys in other practice groups may also participate in the interview process. At the conclusion of a candidate's interviews, the Recruiting Committee will evaluate all feedback and make a final determination whether to extend an offer of employment.

Travel Expenses During Callback Interviews

Ball Janik is a member of NALP and OLRA (the Oregon Legal Recruiting Association). OLRA is a NALP city-group, comprised of recruiting and hiring professionals at Oregon law firms and Career Services professionals from Oregon law schools. Recruiting administrators at member and some non-OLRA member law firms will coordinate interviews at mutually convenient times and share reasonable applicant travel expenses during callback interviews. Travel expenses during screening interviews are not generally reimbursed.
